01FAQ

The questions people ask before signing.

Answered here rather than saved for a first call, because the answer is the same every time and you should not have to book something to hear it. If yours is not here, ask — it usually ends up on this page afterwards.

02Questions

Before you start

What gets asked on the first call, roughly in this order.

How much does a site cost?
Every shape of site on the services page carries a starting figure, a monthly care figure, and a timeline, so you can put yourself in the right range before speaking to anybody. What you actually pay is agreed after the first conversation and written into a proposal as one number. Nothing is billed by the hour, then or later.
How long does it take?
Two to eight weeks from kickoff, depending on the shape of the site. Content is almost always the long pole: builds wait on copy and photographs far more often than copy waits on the build. That is the reason we write the pages with you rather than asking you to send them over.
What do you need from me?
About an hour at the start, an hour in the middle, and an hour at the end. In between we need the things only you have — the real prices, the real hours, an honest account of what you actually do, and one person who can say yes. You do not need to arrive with a brief, a moodboard, or finished copy.
What happens to my existing site and its search rankings?
We map every old URL to its new equivalent before launch, so existing links and search results keep working. Rankings usually settle within a few weeks. If your current site ranks well for particular pages, tell us early and we will plan around them.
Do you work with businesses outside your area?
Yes. Nearly all of this runs over a call and email. The exception is photography: if the site needs pictures of your premises, your work, or you, somebody has to be in the room, and we will either come or help you brief a photographer near you.

While it is being built

How the work runs, and where the boundary sits.

Can I edit the site myself?
The parts worth editing, yes. Your site is written by hand rather than assembled in a page builder, so there is no drag-and-drop editor and there will not be one: that is the trade that makes it fast and keeps it from breaking. What you get instead is the short list of things that genuinely change during a year, wired into your dashboard when the site is built. Opening hours, prices, whether you are taking new customers, the paragraph on your about page. Those you change yourself, any time, and they are live immediately.
What if I want a new page, or something moved?
Send it to us and we build it. New pages, new sections, and anything to do with how the site looks are developer work, because the site is hand written rather than dragged together. Small changes are covered by the care plan and usually done the same day. Anything larger is quoted first, and we tell you before it is billable.
Who owns the code and the design?
We do, while you are a client. The site is hand written and we are the ones maintaining it, and holding the code is what lets us fix, update, and re-deploy it without billing you for every hour. Your domain, your content, and any third party accounts are registered in your name from the start, not ours. If you cancel and want the code, it is yours: we hand it over and help you move it. The one thing that stays ours either way is the shared platform the dashboard runs on, which you are licensed to use while you are a client.
How do payments work on a store?
Checkout is hosted by the payment provider, so card details go straight from your customer to them and never touch our servers or yours. That keeps your compliance obligations at the simplest tier. You get the money; we get a notification that an order happened.

After it launches

What you are paying for once the site is live.

What does the monthly care plan actually cover?
Hosting, SSL, daily backups, uptime monitoring, security updates, and small content changes. It also covers someone answering when something breaks, which is the part that matters at 8am on a Monday. Bigger pieces of work are quoted separately, and we tell you before anything is billable.
What happens when something breaks?
Monitoring usually notices before you do, so often the first you hear of it is that it has been fixed. Anything stopping the site doing its job is picked up the same working day and is not billable — it is the thing the care plan exists for. Everything else is scheduled, and anything large enough to carry a price is quoted before it starts.
Do I have to stay on the care plan?
No. It is a rolling monthly agreement with no minimum term. If you cancel, we hand over the code, help you move the site to another host, and leave everything else already in your name. We would rather you stayed because it is useful than because leaving is difficult.

The figures behind the first answer are on the services page, one per shape of site, alongside what each one does not include.

Send the question. You will get an answer from the person who would build the site, and if it is a good one it ends up on this page.
